A LAND MORE KIND THAN HOME- WILEY CASH

It's raining, it's pouring,
An old man is snoring.
He went to bed and bumped his head,
And couldn't get up in the morning.

Deviating slightly from my reading list for this year, I bring to you dear reader, a review 'A Land More Kind Than Home'. I remember it was a rainy day, the day I picked up this book while looking for a good fictional read and the title made me choose this one!

A Land More Kind Than Home is the story that surrounds the bond of love between Jess Hall and his brother Christopher (aka Stump) and the unfortunate and horrifying series of events that soon follows his family. The book is written in a narrative format, narrated by Sister Adelaide Lyle, Jess Hall himself and the local sheriff Clem Barefield. All of these characters possess stories of their own past, which drives their actions in what lies ahead in the book. Jess narrates his life with his parents and his eccentric yet loving bond with his brother. Sr Adelaide, whose elegant personality reflects deep values and compassion for people. Clem Barefield, brave, responsible and a professional when it comes to performing his duties, and the many more interesting characters such as Jimmy Hall, Carson Chambliss, and Julie Hall. Trust me, these personalities are here to take you on a ride!

Briefly, the story goes around Pastor Chambliss' unbelievably inimical and "religious" acts in the church which is neither appreciated nor encouraged by Sr Adelaide and how the Hall family ends up falling prey to the perilous acts of Pastor Chambliss.

One of the reasons I enjoyed reading this book is because there were only a certain few characters of significance, unlike in some other stories where the reader is flooded with a bunch of characters to remember unnecessarily. Wiley Cash made the story effectively concise. A minuscule observation, however, is that in every narrative, the story of the character is told. While I realize how the build-up is necessary for character development, the suspense that the story built made it hard for me to still focus on the past events of those characters. You could say it is a riveting tale and I certainly couldn't wait to get to the last page.

Do check out this book for a gripping yet beautifully told tale that is certain to hit a few emotional spots in your heart. Thank you so much for reading and I will see you soon with another review!

"We thought we heard you and Mama inside...But it wasn't you." I said.
"What do you mean?"
"It wasn't you inside there with her."
