After
having followed my reading list and already having finished 4-5 books on the
list, I chose this book to be the first review just because how highly
influential this book has been to me. (No pun intended). After having read
quite a few self-help books, I can say that only a few manage to actually leave
a mark on you as a reader.
How to Win
Friends and Influence People is one of those books, that if read correctly, not
only leaves a mark but also with many lessons that can be applied in businesses
and relationships too. Why I say that this book has to be read correctly is
because, in the case of non-fiction or self-help books, it is usually difficult
to finish the book. Why? Because we tend to lose interest very quickly. What
you could rather do is read this book slowly, maybe 1 or 2 chapters a day. The
book contains 4 parts which are also sections which state the 4 biggest lessons
in the book. Under these 4 parts, there are subtopics that help in learning the
ultimate lesson of that chapter. I know it sounds rather complicated, but trust
me, it makes it much easier and fun to read.
What I
enjoyed most about this book is how Dale Carnegie has provided enough proof to
validate his point, behind understanding of the stated principles. This shows
his expertise, hard-work and the amount of research that went behind this book.
These principles, like I said before, can not only be applied in business but
also in our personal day to day lives. I could connect and relate to most of
these topics in the book so deeply, that I am reminded to better my skills with
people. For ease of remembrance, every chapter ends with a summary of the whole
lesson/ objective of that chapter. This way one can even go back to re-read the
book as and when he/she wants.
For the
above stated reasons and the author’s amenable opinions on behavior, I have
enjoyed and taken my own time to absorb this book in the best way I could. I
also know that I would be returning to this book, time and again to remember the
lessons I learnt. I encourage any person, no matter which pursuit you belong
to, to read this book and try to get the best out of it. Trust me, you won’t
regret it.
‘you have to be interested in people if you
want to be a successful writer of stories.’
