I finished reading this book minutes before writing this
review, and it was only because I couldn’t wait to tell you guys what a piece
of art this book is! This book was a gift to me by my brother and is my first
ever Stephen King novel. It’s safe to say that I was off to a great start.
Finders Keepers is the second volume in the trilogy that
focuses around Detective Bill Hodges, and after having read this, I can't wait to get my hands on the third! The story starts back in 1978 when Morris
Bellamy, a criminal, robs and murders a writer John Rothstein, because he stops
writing a series called ‘The Runner’ which is Bellamy’s obsession. An obsession
so powerful that he is ready to kill for it, which he does. After being
convicted for decades for another crime that he commits, Morris is hell-bound
to revive his treasure. In the course of Morris’s arrest, a young boy named
Pete Saubers finds what seemed like ‘manna
from heaven’ for his family’s financial crisis. His oblivion to the fact
that this manna puts him in an
unimaginable danger from a vengeful Morris.
Reading this book was more than reading a great
crime-thriller as I was able to connect with King’s way of writing. Throughout
the book, the author has depicted marvelously, the passion in writing and the
power of reading. Also how this power can drive a person to act beyond limits.
One of the guidelines that I work with, while writing book reviews is to review
the book that I read and not the book that I wish the author had written.
Having known this, I could relate to the smoldering animosity that Morris
Bellamy felt for John Rothstein for having shunned his favorite character in
the manner that he did. These extreme feelings are what kept me hooked to learn
more about these motley characters and jumping time periods.
To summarize the review, Finders Keepers is a definite
thumbs up from me, for anyone who would want to connect with the world of
writers and readers. Not just them, but also great crime-thriller fans. You
must give this book a shot. A slight mention that this book contains content
that will be explicit for some. Nevertheless, an enthralling read overall!
